Why it is mandatory
Municipal bye-laws make a dog licence compulsory: a pet dog kept within corporation limits must be registered and must carry a valid licence, renewed every year.
What happens without one
An unregistered dog can be impounded by the municipal authorities, and fines apply for keeping an unregistered pet in residential or commercial premises. A registered pet is also far easier to trace and return if lost.
